The second trilogy of the The Kyrennei Series begins in another place with events that at first seem unrelated but in the end will bring more peril than J. Company has ever known before.

First we must look back  before the breaking of the treaty between Meikans and the Addin, when the world was still moderately stable. While J. Company hunkers down with a few Kyrennei refugees at a clandestine base in Canada, others are left to the dubious mercy of the treaty. Or if they are Kyrennei, they receive no mercy at all.

On the campus of Michigan Tech, a masked gunman storms Maya Gardner’s university classroom and forces her to leave with him. Terror drains into consternation when he turns out to be a guy she knows and he claims he’s rescuing her from a worse fate.

Plunged into the terrifying underground war for freedom, Maya and her abductor Kai Linden travel on foot across Wisconsin in the winter, searching for a place where the Addin cannot reach them.

Maya knows nothing of the involved world, but she does know about being an outsider. Having grown up biracial in an adoptive home, she is now asked to believe that she carries the genetic code of a non-human people. To survive she must trust someone who sounds crazy and find the strength to break through her paralyzing fear.

Kai, a twenty-year-old Meikan, is torn between grief over the loss of his own parents, the need to save his younger brother from Addin brainwashing and his love for Maya.
